Real Madrid-Baskonia: second EuroLeague playoff clash

Every playoff game is worth the same, but certain ones can be more decisive than others. Tonight's match is certainly a key moment and Real Madrid are well aware of it. After taking a 1-0 lead against Baskonia less than 48 hours ago, tonight they have the chance to make a real statement of intent in the series. Another win at the WiZink Center, which is sure to deliver another intense atmosphere, would place us just one more away from the goal of reaching the Final Four. It won't be easy against opposition who always compete hard and will be eager to take a point in Madrid.

With barely enough time to take in what was a superb opening-game win, Chus Mateo's boys face another hugely demanding test, both physically and mentally. But the potential reward is the chance to travel to the Buesa Arena with the ability to close out the series and make sure any decider, if necessary, would be played in front of our home fans. There is little for either team to discover. Madrid were far superior in the first match-up, based around a collective defense to limit the effects of Howard and Costello, and a well-rehearsed offense that will encourage them to follow the game plan once more. Key elements to watch out for: don't allow the opposition to run and keep a close eye on shooting from the perimeter.

What to know about 1-0?
Whenever Madrid have opened the playoff series with victory, they've gone on to win every time. That's seven in total, three of which ended 3-0 (Maccabi in 2012/13 and 2021/22, and Panathinaikos in 2018/19). Twice, they emerged victorious 3-1 (Anadolu Efes in 2014/15 and Darussafaka in 2016/17) and twice more it was 3-2 (Valencia in 2010/11 and Olympiacos in 2013/14).

Going for the record
Following Tuesday's win, the team have equalled their highest number of victories in a season - the 28 they managed the year of the Undécima in 2022/23. Today, they are in with a real chance of going one better in the second playoff match, a reflection of just how well Chus Mateo's boys are performing this season. Tonight, it's all eyes on 2-0.
