On 31 March 1957, Real Madrid played their first ever basketball league game. This was against Estudiantes, who they beat 76-61. That first edition was contested by six clubs and was very evenly matched, with the Madridistas winning on the last matchday.
The squad that ushered in the Real Madrid legacy in the league was coached by Ignacio Pinedo and had Alfonso MartÃnez as its offensive fulcrum, who ended up as the top scorer in the championship. Since then, Real Madrid have become the best team in the history of the competition with 36 titles.
