Real Madrid failed to win on their visit to take on Joventut Badalona in round nine of the league. They were better in the first half, scoring nine three-pointers and doing a good job on the defensive rebound (40-45), but after that, they lacked continuity and their opponents took the game in the final seconds. Campazzo, with 19 points and 26 PIR, was the standout performer for our team, with Garuba returning from injury two months later.
Our team, which arrived at the Olímpico de Badalona with the entire squad available for the first time this season, entered the game with the aim of not letting Joventut run. They were good on the offensive rebound in the first few minutes and added some good three-pointers. Hezonja (6 points) and Abalde (5) slowed down the home side's run to make it 10-15 at the start. La Penya reacted in the final stretch of the first quarter, with a 9-0 run, but a final push from Madrid with two more three-pointers, the second from Ibaka on the buzzer, allowed us to finish the quarter in front (21-23).
Madrid also won the second quarter
Ibaka (8 points) maintained Madrid's lead against a Joventut team in which Tomic was the focal point of their play. Chus Mateo brought in Garuba, back after two months injured, and the centre had a very good return (2 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist). Hugo González also stood out on both sides of the court with a spectacular block. With the score tied at 32, the madridistas took another step forward by being more aggressive in defence and always with a high percentage of three-point shots (60%) to be 10 up at the 17' mark. However, turnovers cut the offensive rhythm at times and Joventut came close again with Robertson and Pustovyi. Campazzo (7 points and 13 PIR), with the team's ninth three-pointer of the first half, came through to leave the score at 40-45 at the break.
Chus Mateo continued with the rotations and sharing the minutes (all 12 played at least 5 minutes in the first half) to keep up the level after the extra effort of two overtimes in the Clásico. The tireless Campazzo was everywhere. Five points from him and a three-pointer from Abalde put Madrid nine ahead (44-53, min. 24). History would repeat itself and Joventut, encouraged by several quick rallies from our team and a greater presence in the paint with two towers on the court (Tomic and Pustovyi), took the lead at the end of the third quarter (59-57).
Small details decide the game
Joventut's lead was still open at the start of the final period with Madrid unable to find continuity in their play. Eight points down with three minutes to go (73-65), our team made a last-ditch effort and went on a 0-10 run to get within one point. Hezonja missed a three-pointer that would have completed the comeback. A time-out cut off the Madrid advances and the game ended up going Penya's way from the free throw line (80-76, min. 40).
