Eighteen years without Puskas
One of the greatest strikers in the history of football passed away on 17 November 2006.
Ferenc Puskas died at the age of 79 on 17 November 2006. On that day, Real Madrid, as well as world football, lost one of the best strikers ever. The Hungarian player became a world legend thanks to his goalscoring ability and at Real Madrid he completed a dream strikeforce alongside Di Stéfano, Kopa, Rial and Gento.
Puskas arrived at our club at the age of 31. His performances helped to bring about one of Real Madrid's most successful eras. As a Real Madrid player, Puskas won 3 European Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 5 Spanish League titles and 1 Spanish Cup. He scored 242 goals in 262 games and is one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of Real Madrid.
World footballing legacy
Among his unforgettable moments as a Real Madrid player is the final of the fifth European Cup, in which he scored four goals against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960. This is still the best record in a final of Europe's top competition. As a tribute to his career, a bust of Puskas stands in Real Madrid City. In addition, FIFA named the trophy for the best goal of the year (Puskas Award) after him.
