Today marks the 41st anniversary of Real Madrid‘s first basketball European Cup Winners’ Cup. It was on 14 March 1984 that the Whites were crowned champions in the Belgian city of Ostend after beating Olimpia Milan 82-81. Brian Jackson was the hero of the final, scoring 27 points and two decisive free throws.

Real Madrid started the competition in group B with US Scavolini Victoria, Panathinaikos and Pardubice. They qualified for the next round in first place with 5 wins and 1 defeat. In the semi-finals they beat KK Cibona in a double-header. In the final, they had to come back from 34-38 at half-time. With eight seconds left, the team led by Lolo Sainz was losing by one point. In search of victory, Corbalán missed a shot, but Jackson took the offensive rebound and forced a personal foul. The American scored two free throws and gave the title to Real Madrid, who extended their European legend.
