It was on 14th March 1989 that Real Madrid lifted their second European Cup Winners' Cup in basketball. The Peace and Friendship Stadium in Athens was the setting for one of the best finals in the history of European basketball, in which our team beat Snaidero Caserta (117-113) in extra time. But above all, this final is remembered for Petrovic's outstanding performance, scoring 62 points against the Italian team.

On the road to the final, Real Madrid beat Rangers BC in the round of 16. In the quarter-final group, they finished first in Group B with 5 wins in 6 games and ahead of Snaidero Caserta, their rivals in the title game, Hapoel Galil Elyon and Cholet. In the semi-finals, the Whites beat KK Cibona and went through to the final in Athens, which was characterised by the incredible duel between Petrovic (62 points) and Oscar Schmidt (44).
