On the 24th of April 1988, the team made mathematically certain they would win the championship when they thrashed Betis 6-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu, thanks to a Míchel brace and goals for Hugo Sánchez, Gallego, Gordillo and Sanchís. The madridista dominance that season saw them win the league on matchday 34, with four games still to play.
Real Madrid ended the 1987/88 campaign, the third of their five consecutive successes clinched by the Quinta del Buire, with an 11-point lead over Real Sociedad. On an individual level, the squad coached by Leo Beenhakker boasted both the best goalkeeper and top goalscorer. Hugo Sánchez was crowned Pichichi with 29 goals and Buyo took the Zamora Trophy.
