On 6 April 1978, Real Madrid were crowned European basketball champions for the sixth time in the club's history. Four years after winning the club's fifth title in Nantes against Pallacanestro Varese, the Whites once again beat the Italian outfit in the final held in Munich, 75-67. The victory also served to break the deadlock between the two clubs, who had dominated the continental competition until that point with five titles apiece.
Szczerbiak (26 points), and Brabender (16) were Madrid's top point scorers in the final, which reached half-time with the score just in Pallacanestro Varese's favour at 40-41. The team coached by Lolo Sainz, who clinched the first of his two European Cups as Real Madrid coach, produced an excellent second-half display to see off the Italians. The victory further enhanced Real Madrid's dominance of the European Cup, where they have won 11 titles to date.
