4-0: Madrid slip to defeat in Spanish Super Cup semi-final

Real Madrid were beaten by Barcelona in the semi-final clash of the Spanish Super Cup, which took place at the Municipal de Butarque stadium (Leganés). The Whites will not be in the final after goals from Mariona (2) and Paralluelo (2) secured victory for Barça. The game was evenly matched and there were chances for both teams in the early stages of play, but Barcelona took the lead in the 11th minute. Mariona made the most of a dead ball in the box after a corner to make it 1-0. Three minutes later, Paralluelo scored the second after a great piece of individual play. The madridistas looked to close the gap and came close to pulling one back with efforts from Olga and Feller that were blocked by the defence.

It was a good spell for the madridistas. Nevertheless, in the 36th minute the referee awarded a penalty after a VAR review of a challenge on Mariona in a collision with Ivana inside the area. The Barça footballer converted the spot-kick from 12 yards. In the second half, Paralluelo scored the fourth from Graham Hansen's pass and, in the 78th minute, Patri Guijarro netted a fifth, although it was subsequently disallowed for offside following a VAR review. Toril's team next face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (Wednesday, 24 January, 9pm CET).
