Athenea was on target for Real Madrid who were beaten by Chelsea despite a solid performance by Toril's side.
Real Madrid slipped to defeat against Chelsea on matchday 5 of the Women's Champions League. Despite the defeat, the Whites produced a strong performance at Stamford Bridge in a game that was evenly balanced throughout. Reiten fired the home side in front from the penalty spot (61') and Athenea levelled in the 68th minute, but a Chavas own goal shortly afterwards sealed the win for the English side.
Whilst Chelsea pressed in the opening exchanges, it didn't take long for the Whites to up the intensity and even the game up. After three good saves from Chavas to prevent the home side from scoring, Real Madrid's opportunities arrived. In the 23rd minute, Raso came close to getting on the end of Teresa's cross from the left. The Madrid player unleashed a powerful shot in the ensuing move, but Lawrence turned the ball away from under the post. Shortly afterwards, Hampton saved Linda C.'s shot after a superb piece of individual play from the Colombian.
On the hour mark, the referee awarded a penalty following Raso's challenge on Charles in the box and Reiten converted from the spot. James almost made it 2-0 soon after, but Chavas was once again on hand to turn the ball behind for a corner. In the 68th minute, Athenea equalised after the goalkeeper parried Raso's effort. But Chelsea were soon back in front after Chavas turned the ball into her own goal following Cuthbert's shot (70'). Toril's team will finish the group stage and will make their final appearance in the competition on Tuesday, 30 January against Hacken (6.45pm CET).
